Lampard wary of the proposed Champions League expansion
Chelsea coach Frank Lampard fears players will be exhausted once the Champions League increases the number of football matches.
“I think the level is right now. The Champions League is very good, I like the current format. If you ask if we can play more in the European Cup, I don’t know whether the where is the plan to arrange those increased matches”.
European Club Association (ECA) president Andrea Agnelli is proposing to change the structure of the Champions League. Accordingly, the number of participating teams can be increased to 96, with the promotion and relegation mechanism introduced in the last month. Discussions are ongoing to agree on a change in the Champions League structure from 2024-2025 onwards.
But Lampard was worried about the changes. So, if we change the Champions League format, we will have to discuss very well. carefully on how the tournament actually works.
“As a coach, I feel the weight of the matches more clearly than when I was a player, although I am still running as a player. You are thinking about how to keep the team healthy, and that “The challenge is with every tournament we play in,” the Chelsea leader added.
In order to have time to play for the Champions League once the tournament is scaled up, there was an opinion on the death of the British League Cup. But Lampard rejected this option and considered the British League Cup to be a valuable tournament
“I have a lot of emotional memories with the English League Cup, because I have won several times for this Cup while I was playing for Chelsea. It was the first tournament I had a trophy. At home, this tournament gives The teams feel confident when playing in the Cup format at home. This is very important, “Lampard added.
